Pronoun ne

stands for

  1. prepositional phrases consisting of di + noun

example: Parlate della vacanza in Italia? – Sì, ne parliamo.

  1. partitive noun phrases

example: Ho bevuto del vino. Ne ho bevuto poco.

  1. nouns preceded by a quantifier*. Quantifiers in Italian must always be accompanied by ne, they never stand on their own.

examples:

Quante sorelle hai? – Ne ho due. (it is not possible to say Ho due.)

Quanti limoni prendi? – Ne prendo tre.

Ci sono quattro sedie in cucina? – No, ce ne sono cinque (molte, tante...)

*quantifiers:

poco, molto, quanto, tanto, altro, diversi, vari, nessuno, alcuno, uno, numerals

 

 

Properties of ne

ne behaves like unstressed pronoun, i.e.

  • it precedes the noun (in the indicative mood) or it is attached to the infinitive (when the  verbs dovere, potere, volere are used)

examples:

Ne parliamo.

Ne possiamo parlare. / Possiamo parlarne

Ti scrivo due messaggi. – Te ne scrivo due.

  • agreement with past participle:

There is an agreement in number and gender with the noun ne stands for.

Quante sigarette hai fumato? – Ne ho fumate tre.

Quanti regali hai comprato? – Ne ho comprati due.

There are two possibilities of agreement where there is a quantifier:

Di pere, ne ha comprate due chili. – agreement with pere

Di pere, ne ha comprati due chili. – agreement with chili (quantifier)
